Armed man caught trying to break into home as woman, children slept

Police have charged a man and seized multiple weapons after he allegedly tried to break into a Melbourne home where a woman and three children were sleeping.

Officers arrived at a home on Savige Street in Ascot Vale about 2.05am, shortly after receiving reports a man was allegedly breaking down the front door.

Officers arrested the man at the scene and seized a sledgehammer, an iron bar and a fake gun wrapped in a black sheet.

The woman and three children home at the time were not physically injured.

It’s alleged the man mistakenly entered the wrong home, police said.

He was charged with aggravated burglary, going equipped to steal and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.

He is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
