A teenage boy will face court today after being charged over the alleged sexual assault of an elderly woman at a park in the NSW Hunter region on Monday.

Police said the woman was walking in Brooklyn Park at Ashtonfield at about 7.20pm when she was knocked to the ground by a male who attempted to sexually assault her.

The male allegedly left the park on a push scooter, and the woman contacted a family member who later alerted police.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.

Following extensive investigations, detectives executed a search warrant at a home in East Maitland at about 7.40pm last night.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested at the home and taken to Maitland Police Station.

The teen was later charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexually touching without consent and inciting another to sexually touch them without consent.

He was refused bail to appear before a children’s court today.
