A man was arrested hiding underwater after a fatal shooting and chase overnight south of Brisbane.

Police were called Hugh Muntz Park, next to Beenleigh Shopping Centre in Logan, at about 10.40pm.

They discovered a man with a wound to the chest, who was pronounced dead at the scene about five minutes later.

He has been identified as a 35-year-old Bahrs Scrub man.

Police believe a stolen white Kia Stonic sedan, bearing stolen number plates, drove away from the scene shortly after the shooting.

Officers spotted the car at Kumbari Avenue in Labrador and put spikes on the road on Jabiru Island.

The car continued for a short distance before the driver abandoned the car at the intersection of Hope Island Road and Helensvale Road, and fled on foot into nearby scrub.

The Dog Squad was called in for the following search, and a 22-year-old Beenleigh man was arrested shortly after.

Police claim the man had been hiding underwater in the reeds near Saltwater Park.

Officers allegedly discovered ammunition on the man, and a discarded firearm nearby.

Hugh Muntz Park and the abandoned Kia have been declared crime scenes.

The investigation continues.
