Homemade explosives were among the dangerous items police found inside the vehicle in Clovelly Park.
It was meant to be a routine callout for paramedics, called to check on a man asleep in his car for several hours, but it quickly became a full-scale emergency response.
Residents told 9News they noticed the car sitting on Harcourt Avenue just before 1:30pm on Tuesday.
Emergency services then arrived on scene about 5:15pm, after receiving calls from concerned locals.
Police allegedly discovered two homemade explosive devices, a knife and meth inside the blue Nissan.
Police then arrested the man who’d been in the car before specialists from the Bomb Response Unit arrived to seize the explosives.
On Wednesday, the man was behind bars, but his car remained on the street, with some unusual items still visible inside, including a gas cylinder and a petrol can.
The 39-year-old man appeared at Christie’s Beach Magistrates Court on Wednesday, charged with possessing an explosive device in public and carrying an offensive weapon.
