Two people have died after a train collided with a ute in regional Victoria.

A freight train struck the car at a railway crossing on Reddies Road in Cressy, about 40km north of Colac, just after 10am.

The two people in the ute, who are yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The train driver and two staff members were the only people onboard the train at the time.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established and an investigation is ongoing.
