Swatting is the act of making hoax calls to emergency services, designed to trigger an urgent and widespread emergency response.

The boy has now been charged with 12 counts of using a telecommunications network with the intention to commit a serious offence, being conveying false information about danger, and one count of unauthorised possession of a prohibited firearm.

AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner Graeme Marshall said offenders of swatting crimes tended to be young males.

“These perpetrators, often young males aged from 11-25, are engaging in crime types such as swatting, doxxing and hacking to achieve status, notoriety and recognition in their online groups,” he said.

“[They act] under the mistaken belief they are anonymous.”

Marshall claimed the boy’s alleged offences resulted in significant financial harm.
