Kimberley residents are being hit by wild weather tonight after Tropical Cyclone Luana crossed the coast north of Broome about 2pm [AWST].

Luana was a Category 2 system when it made landfall along the Dampier Peninsula and brings the potential for a significant storm surge.

Wind gusts up to 106km/h were recorded north of Broome, in Lombadina, along with more than 100 millimetres of rain since midnight.

The system is expected to be sitting to the west of Derby tonight, which will be paired with extremely high tides of up to 11 metres, keeping residents on high alert.

“The SES has been really good about putting out sandbags for people and informing people about what might happen if you live a bit closer to the marsh,” Derby resident Chris told 9News.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns 100mm-200mm of rainfall per day is possible with this system, as it moves inland over the next 48 hours.

Tropical Cyclone Luana is expected to weaken to a Category 1 storm overnight but flood warnings are still in place for north and west Kimberley rivers, with residents advised to keep an eye on the warnings and have their cyclone kits ready.
