A cave diving expedition has ended in tragedy with a drowning in South Australia’s south-east.

Emergency crews rushed to Tank Cave at Tantanoola, west of Mount Gambier, at 10.30am today.

It’s believed one diver discovered another who had drowned after becoming trapped in rocks.

Specialist police travelled to the scene to recover the body of the 65-year-old man from Victoria.

It’s not the first death in the cave.

In 2011, two people perished while traversing the elaborate cave system.

Tank Cave is popular among divers drawn to its seven-kilometre network filled with crystal clear water.

Police said they had no safety concerns about the incident but would prepare a report for the coroner.
