The man and his companion were on Stockton Street near the roundabout at Church Street when they attempted to cross just before 9am yesterday.

“He paused briefly at the pedestrian traffic island in the middle of the road, before continuing to cross the road,” police said.

“A vehicle described as a blue Ford Territory, or similar, entered the roundabout and clipped the man, impacting his left elbow and leg, and also struck the dog, killing it instantly.”

The driver didn’t stop or provide details, police said.

Anyone who saw a blue Ford Territory wagon or a similar vehicle in the area yesterday morning are urged to contact Nelson Bay Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are also interested in anyone who might have dash cam or CCTV footage.
