A heatwave can pose serious health risks, especially to people like the elderly, the very young, and those with illness.

Steve Vaughan from NSW Ambulance has these tips for avoiding heat-related illness.

“There’s some simple things you can do, like wearing light, loose fitting clothing,” he said.

“You can close doors, windows and blinds of your home to really try and block out that direct sunlight and hot air, and use cooling devices wherever you can.”

He urged people to limit their time outdoors and to do exercise or physical activities earlier in the morning before the heat peaks.

“Reach out to parts of our community that are more susceptible to the impacts of heat, like the elderly, pregnant women, people who have pre-existing medical conditions and even those that are working outdoors,” he said.

“Make sure they’re aware of the conditions, and if there’s something you can do to help them during the next couple of days to stay safe, let’s reach out and do that.”
