Sandy Weill, the former CEO of American bank Citigroup, and his wife announced the donation to the University of California (UC), Davis today, one of the largest donations to veterinary medicine worldwide.

It will also see the university’s vet hospital named after the pair.

The pair made the donation through the Weill Family Foundation, and whilst they have made large donations to medical causes in the past, their latest cause is a personal one.

Their dog Angel was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2018 and received treatment at UC Davis.

“Angel’s care at UC Davis left a lasting impression on our family,” Joan said in a statement.

“As Sandy and I became more involved with the school over the years, we have been continually inspired by its leadership, dedication to team science, pursuit of solving complex health challenges, and its unwavering commitment to animals and the families who love them.”

Angel has since passed away, but the pair now own another dog called Sweet Pea.

UC Davis announced the donation would be used to build a new teaching hospital, as well as supporting clinical research.

“This gift empowers us to drive discoveries, expand access to world-class education and develop new insights at the intersection of veterinary and human health,” Dr Mark Stetter from UC Davis said.
