Former federal Liberal MP Dr Katie Allen has died, aged 59.
Allen, who held the Melbourne seat of Higgins from 2019 until 2022, revealed earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Katie (Mum),” a post on the former MP’s Facebook page tonight.
“She spent her life caring for others as a mother, doctor, professor, MP and friend.
“She passed in peace surrounded by family and lived a full, beautiful life, all the way to the end.
Allen shared in May that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma that had already spread.
She spoke at the time about feeling “immense gratitude for the life I’ve led”.
“I’m surrounded by love – my family, my friends, my community. I’ve been fortunate to serve both as a doctor and in public life, always with the hope of making things better for others,” she said.
