Ambulance paramedics treated the girl before she was taken in a critical condition to John Hunter Hospital, where she later died.

The driver of the ute, a 25-year-old man, was uninjured.

Police said he had been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the crash.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
