More than $2.6 billion in forgotten money is being held by state governments across the country waiting to be claimed.

Australians are being urged to spend a few minutes checking if they are eligible for a portion of the cash.

The sum includes share dividends, trust accounts, refunds, commissions, deceased estates and money from a range of other sources.

The money is often lost because of name or address changes.

Here is how you can check whether you are owed a slice of $2.6 billion.
