A huge sinkhole has opened up at a popular football field in Melbourne’s north-east, sparking an investigation.

The collapsed turf was seen at AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg yesterday afternoon and overnight.

Locals gathered before police taped the area off, with authorities urging people to stay away.

Locals posted images of the sinkhole to social site Reddit. (Reddit)

The oval is reportedly near where borer machines are working underground on the North East Link project, however the cause remains unknown.

Banyule City Council also confirmed on social media it was aware of the sinkhole and that it was “working closely with relevant agencies to assess the situation and determine what’s next”.

People have been urged to steer clear. (9News)

Vic Emergency warned that the sinkhole might grow in size and echoed advice for people to stay away.

The body promised a new update at 5pm this evening if there were no changes beforehand.

No further plans on repairing the sinkhole have been announced.

9news.com.au has contacted the North East Link Project for comment.
