A man is under police guard in hospital after a minivan chase in Melbourne early this morning.

Police spotted the van, which they allege was of interest in an ongoing investigation, travelling on Leakes Road, Truganina, at about 4am.

Officers covertly followed the van along the West Gate Freeway until it exited at the Kings Way off-ramp and started travelling toward the city.

Police deployed stop sticks on Kings Way, which slowed the van, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over.

A pursuit began but was called off when the van crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

A short time later, the van collided head-on with a car on the Kings Way Bridge.

The van driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.
