A man is missing and another is in hospital after an incident at a coal mine in Central Queensland.

It had earlier been feared that workers were trapped at Curragh Coal Mine at Blackwater, about 800 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. However, the incident appeared now to be a roof collapse.

Emergency crews were called to the site about 3pm (4pm AEDT).

Acting Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Tony Perrett said two workers had been “recovered safely” and crews were trying to rescue a third.

“Emergency crews, including the Queensland Mines and Rescue Service, are on site and doing everything possible,” he told the ABC.

“My thoughts are with all of those involved, their loved ones, the entire mining community.”
