A man has been shot dead by police after a siege on the New South Wales Central Coast.

Police attended a home on Wells Street in Springfield, near Gosford, in a welfare check just before 3.30pm yesterday.

A 49-year-old man at the property armed himself with a screwdriver and other sharp objects, so police established a perimeter around the property.
