The opposition has now announced a new measure of their own designed to keep kids safe.
“Under the NSW opposition’s policy, if you are under 18, use an e-bike for a commercial purpose or run a shared service scheme, you will be required to have a licence plate,” Shadow Minister for Roads and Transport Natalie Ward said in a social media post this morning.
“Sensible solutions for common issues in the community.”
Under the proposal, people over 18 who use e-bikes for private transport would be exempt from the rules.
NSW is not the only state with e-bikes in its sights; a Western Australian parliamentary inquiry made 33 recommendations to make them safer.
They include tougher penalties for road offences and harsher punishment for retailers who sell e-bikes or help riders with illegal modifications.
