A cold case search for the remains of a South Australian woman who disappeared almost 40 years ago has been reignited, with detectives scouring a large property in the state’s south-east.

Margaret Bernie, 34, was last seen at her Mount Gambier home on January 23, 1988.

She was reported missing by her sister on February 10 of that year after failing to contact her family for weeks.

Police believe she was murdered.

A renewed search by detectives and local SES volunteers is focusing on a home on Burnda Street in Compton, west of Mount Gambier.

Crews are expected to spend today and tomorrow searching the one sq km property, as part of a review of evidence collected in the cold case.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said there are likely to be individuals in the Mount Gambier and South-East community who know what happened to Margaret.

“We would encourage those people to come forward and speak with police,” he said.
