While communities aren’t expected to feel the brunt of the cyclone until later today or tomorrow, the federal government has already begun its emergency response.

“NEMA (the National Emergency Management Agency) has already deployed officials into the area,” McBain says.

“We have implemented our national coordination mechanism and we are arranging a range of strategic planning issues.

“We remain ready to assist if there are any requests for assistance.”

She has also spoken to NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro to discuss what assistance is needed.

Moon adds that there are also extra resources available in the area.

“We have stood up the national emergency management stockpile, which includes temporary emergency shelter, power, water supply, sewerage reticulation, and a range of other services that may speed up recovery after this particular event,” he says.
