The remote town of Paraburdoo recorded a minimum temperature of 35.8 degrees yesterday morning, the highest ever recorded in the state, according to Weatherzone.
It was also the fifth-highest minimum temperature ever seen in Australia.
The high minimum temperature was followed by a day of extreme heat in Western Australia, with the mercury reaching 49 degrees at Onslow Airport in the state’s north coast.
Whilst it was not the hottest temperature ever in the state or in Australia, it meant Onslow Airport was officially the hottest place on earth yesterday.
In fact, Onslow was over 100 degrees hotter than the coldest place on earth yesterday.
The temperature in the Republic of Sakha in Russia was -53.5 degrees, meaning Onslow was 102.5 degrees warmer.
It comes as much of the country is sweating through a heatwave, which is causing extreme bushfire danger.
Temperatures soared above 43 degrees in parts of all states and territories except for the ACT, with Melbourne experiencing its hottest day since 2020.
“Unfortunately, this heat will contribute to extreme and catastrophic fire danger ratings… between Thursday and Saturday,” Weatherzone’s Ben Domensino said.
All of Victoria will be under a fire ban tomorrow, with authorities saying the risk of bushfires will be catastrophic.
