A drunk driver who was more than five times the legal limit has come dangerously close to disaster in one of Adelaide’s most affluent coastal suburbs.

The 40-year-old woman from Glengowrie is accused of smashing into two parked cars on Gilbert Road at Somerton Park, before her vehicle rolled onto its side about 10pm yesterday.

Nearby residents rushed to help the driver, working to free her from the overturned vehicle.

“We were just afraid the car was going to flip over while she was still inside,” said resident Dmitri Ivanov.

“We were just supporting the car, holding to make sure it doesn’t flip over anymore.

“We had to break off the roof, the roof window.”

Jasmin Bullus, one of the owners of the damaged vehicles, recounted the immediate aftermath of the rescue.

“We got her to the side and I told her to sit down, Chloe got her some blankets and water and stuff,” said Bullus.

The driver subsequently underwent a breath test,  registering a reading of 0.262.

While no injuries were reported, both parked vehicles sustained significant damage and are likely to be written off.

One of the owners had been sitting in his vehicle only minutes before the collision occurred.

The driver is expected to face charges related to high-range drink driving.
